With my older girls at school during the day, I’ve been trying to focus on a lot of activities for Thea (2yrs) during the day. She loves to tinker with everything, but she has a bit of an aversion to different textures.

We’ve been getting our hands dirty and feeling gooey things (like spinach!) to help expose her to more sensory stimulation activities.

How to Catch a Turkey

We paired our turkey art activity with How to Catch a Turkey by Adam Wallace and Andy Elkerton.

How to Catch a Turkey is the seventh book in the “How to Catch” series that includes other books such as How to Catch an Elf, How to Catch the Tooth Fairy, How to Catch a Monster, and more!

Thanksgiving time is here again, but there’s a turkey on the run! Can you catch this tricky bird before the school play has begun?

During the month of November, we will be working on a ton of toddler and preschool turkey crafts that are designed to develop fine motor skills, support color recognition, and are easy to setup and clean up. This toddler turkey art activity absolutely fits the bill!

How to Create Toddler Turkey Art

Put the two ends of a pipe cleaner together and measure about an inch from the tips. Twist both pipe cleaners together at this point.

This will create a small hoop to hold while walking your turkey feet. Cut another pipe cleaner and twist this piece between the two toes to give it three toes total.

Toddlers walk turkey feet pretty roughly, so make sure it is twisted a bunch. We didn’t twist one of ours well enough and had a missing toe issue for a bit! Oops!

Add a small amount of tempera paint onto a paper plate. This will be your palette.

You can add multiple colors depending on your child. We stuck with one color because we are working on the color orange.

Dip your “turkey feet” into the paint and walk them across the construction paper.

In the spirit of How to Catch a Turkey, we also ran our feet across the page! We made up a silly song about walking like a turkey and sang it as we made our art.
